can some thing like this be used instead of a full size card to save space since I am just jumping wire to it

I don't really know, this hardware is the hard part for me. It has the w5100 so my guess is it would. Only thing I'm not sure about is the reset circuit. The larger shield has a reset circuit that resets it when the arduino is restarted. Some shields don't have that so you have to manually reset it after power ups. Not sure if that's the case with that one or not.
