email setup/alerts..?

Hi Rob,
I'm having trouble getting this to work... So far I've:
  • Created a throw-away gmail account & tested it...
  • Enabled email in robo-tank settings
  • Entered my throw-away gmail in the "from email..."
  • Carefully entered the password for this email
  • Entered a couple of my personal emails addressed for the "recipients..."
When I click send test email is reads "email sent", but then I'm not receiving anything. I imagine they're not getting out of the raspberry pi or maybe not getting past my router but I'm not sure how to go about problem solving this? (I'm at the novice level with the pi and router settings...) Thanks

Hi @GarrickG unfortunately it looks like gmail stopped supporting 3rd party apps using just username and password to log in. They used to have a "Less Secure App Access" option you could turn on but I've just looked for it and they've removed it. I'll see if I can find another method to use gmail.

Outlook emails work, I'm using mine to send alerts. Maybe setup one of those for now.

Hey Rob, I've tried my hotmail email but didn't get the test email. I rebooted the system after entering my email and password. Can the "From" email and "to" emails be the same?
That's a surprise as I assume this is the email address you use in reef-pi? The from and to addresses can be the same, I will email you another address to try for the "from" to see if this works. It might be something with hotmail not allowing 3rd party apps but if it works with reef-pi it should work here as well. Did you look in the spam or junk folder to see if it went there?

What did you use for SMTP Server and SMTP Port?

This worked great. Thanks!

The hotmail address I was using is the same one I was using with reefpi which was working the day before I switched over to Robotank. I did check my junk folder but I'm not sure what was being used for the SMTP server/port.

Glad that worked. If you are up to it try the following using your hotmail account.

Go to email settings and leave it on the "other" option and change SMTP Server to smtp.office365.com Put your hotmail address in the From field and update the password. Reboot controller and see if you can send a test email.

If this fails try changing the SMTP Server to smtp.live.com Update the password, reboot and try a test email again.

If this fails go back to the email I sent you. :)

I have been trying to setup email alerts for a while and have had no success. I'd rather not setup a new account for this, and the only email address I have that isn't passwordless is live.com. Neither the outlook profile, or the smtp addresses you provided produce sent emails. I've tried both an app password and my account password in case it's a login problem. Any other ideas?

Sorry for the trouble, I just emailed you an address to use until I get this solved. Let me know how it goes.

The trick with Gmail is to create an app password in the security section of your google account. You can use this link to take you directly to the option. Create an app password for Robotank, in the email section select gmail, ender your normal gmail email address in the "from email", and the password you just created. Keep an eye on your receiving email to ensure the emails don't end up in your spam folder (mine did).

Interesting, I no longer have that setting available in the security section. When I click the link you posted it does go to a valid page for app password but says it's not available for my account. This makes it sound like it's available for some accounts. At one point I did have this option on the same account I'm logged into today.

Oh, some good news. @matt was kind enough to share a mod he created for Discord notifications. Now you can setup a free discord server and get notifications on your phone even when the phone is locked. I've got this added to the app so it'll be available soon. I'll setup a tutorial showing how to integrate with Discord, it's not to difficult.

That's really odd. Must be either a legacy thing on accounts of a certain age, or they've tied it to the region where the account is registered. No idea why they would do that as there are loads of reasons why non authenticated email is still a requirement for many businesses.

Yeah it doesn't really make sense. Either way I'm glad it still works for you.
